Another social institution that influenced Derek's outlook on the world would be family. Derek looked to his dad as a mentor and hero and was a main influence in his life growing up. But, the men had the power in the family with no regard to the women's opinion. This caused Derek to not respect his sisters or mom and led to Derek having an overpowering scene with his sister Davina where he tries to force food in Davina's mouth. This is an example of sexism, where Derek feels that men are superior to women.
The social institution of jail is the most important influence to Derek that caused Derek to change his ways. He befriended a black man in jail during his work hours and this led to a friendship. Even though Derek was a part of a white supremacy gang inside jail, he felt a bond with this black man. The white men that Derek spent time with inside jail noticed that Derek was acting different and for this committed terrible acts towards Derek. During his final months in jail, he was alone but was not getting attacked from either white or black gangs. This confused Derek. On his last day, Derek was walking out and realized that the reason he wasn't attacked in jail was because his African American friend was looking out for him. This was the moment that Derek realized that a black man was better towards him then a white man.
